Hair Care Routine

As you can tell from my ends, it’s almost time for my annual cut with Sarah at Population Salon! Before long, I’ll be looking back at these photos, dreaming about having long hair again—you know how it goes.
Earlier this year, I noticed I was losing way more hair than usual—a huge handful after showering. Eventually, I found myself texting with friends to compare our daily hair loss piles! That’s when I knew something was off.
I ran some hormonal tests with my naturopath. Thankfully, nothing concerning showed up which was a huge relief. She wasn’t sure if it was stress or age-related, but suggested I start taking MSM supplements and this amino acid chelate along with the stress management supplements I already take- Omegas, theanine and ashwagandha. Within a month or two, the shedding stopped, and I’m so grateful.
For context my hair is stick-straight, fine, and while I have a lot of it, it gets heavy and oily between washes. Good thing I always love a high ponytail or braid. Or sometimes I’ll pull half back with a mini clip.
One thing that does help is my brush. I invested in the mini Mason Pearson a couple years ago—totally worth the cost and the size is great. It distributes oils evenly and helps me stretch out wash days.
I haven’t colored my hair since high school. The grays are coming in, and I’ll admit—I pluck them as I see them. At some point I know I’ll have to rethink that strategy.
My biggest complaint over the years has been with clean shampoos and conditioners. Most of them left my hair greasy and dull. I’ve tried Dae, Briogeo, Beautycounter and all the Whole Foods brands but recently I fell in love with Roz shampoo and conditioner, which inspired me to share my routine. The smell, the fluffiness, the shine—so good. I use their shampoo and conditioner, followed by the Air Thickening Spray on damp hair before blow drying (or even air drying).
I wash my hair every 2–3 days, and on non-wash days you’ll usually find my hair pulled back. My absolute favorite dry shampoo is The Takesumi Detox—it’s tinted brown (they also make one for blondes), non-sticky, and blends in seamlessly. After testing way too many over the years, this is the one I keep coming back to.
For slicked-back ponytails or taming frizz on humid days, I reach for Lolavie Oil. It’s super lightweight and surprisingly, not greasy.
The only non-clean product I still use is the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. If you’ve tried it, you know why it’s hard to quit. I don’t use it every day, but when I add waves with a wand, it helps hold the shape and adds great texture.
That’s my current lineup! A skincare post is coming soon, and if you missed it, here’s my clean makeup routine from a couple weeks ago. I just picked up a new blush (the luminous peach) and a beige lipstick (the color twig) for fall, which always feels like such a nice seasonal treat.
